Объединение блогов произойдет незаметно и безболезненно для редких читателей. Этот блог, по сути, был давно приговорен к смерти, потому что никто сюда не писал комментов, не задавал вопросов, что говорило о его бесполезности и ненужности.

Посты, подобные тем, что были здесь, будут выкладывать в другом месте открыто, публично.

Подумаю, что сделать с третьим, сибирским. Оставлю тот, пожалуй, в покое. У него свои читатели.

The World Congress for Korean Studies 2007 - Korea in the World: Democracy, Peace, Prosperity and Culture -

The World Congress for Korean Studies 2007 by the Korean Political Science Association will be held in Busan, South Korea, from 23 to 25 August. The main theme for the Congress is "Korea in the World: Democracy, Peace, Prosperity and Culture."

The congress will provide a forum to discuss the latest developments in and around Korea covering a variety of fields of study; research on the issues of leadership, state governance, gender politics, foreign policy, and inter-Korean relations; studies on Korean economy ranging from the issues of economic viability to debates on social fairness; discussion on cultural aspects of Korean society dealing with art, literature, linguistics, and the phenomenon of Hallyu; papers written on Korean history from ancient times to current affairs; sociological investigation of, for example, the problem of aging and low-fertility rate, exodus of young students, and subjects related to migrant workers, etc.

The hosting organization, the Korean Political Science Association (KPSA hereafter) is one of the most prestigious academic associations in Korea mainly composed of scholars of mainly Political Science, Public Administration, and related disciplines. Founded in 1953, it has grown into the largest academic organization in Korea with active membership of over 2,000 individual scholars and institutions. The KPSA seeks to encourage academic activities and intellectual dialogue among scholars and to promote academic exchanges and mutual understanding between Korean and foreign scholars.

Expected to be the largest ever academic gathering of Korean specialists in the world, the Congress will provide all participants with an invaluable opportunity to expose themselves to and exchange information and ideas with scholars coming from different parts of the world with wide range of academic disciplines. An added value of the Congress can be found in its location: Busan, Korea.

Busan, nestled in the southern tip of the country, is the second largest city in Korea, which the largest container handling port in the country and the third largest in the world. The city is one of the favorite tourist destinations during the summer in Korea. Its spectacular view of rugged beaches and well-preserved historical sites along with vibrant economy attracts millions of people all year round. One of the venues of the Congress, Noorimaru, is the place that proudly and successfully hosted the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) summit meeting in November, 2005. The plenary sessions will be held in Nurimaru on the first day of the Congress. The BEXCO complex, the other venue of the Congress where all other panels will convene in the second and third days, is also renowned for the quality of its facilities as a convention center. Adjacent to the beach of Haewoondae, which boasts the most beautiful scenery in Busan, both venues will give the participants a pleasant memory of beautiful landscape, comfort of summer resort, warm hospitality, and state-of-the-art amenities for conventions.
We welcome submission of papers, full-panel and roundtable proposals for any of the areas mentioned above and other related fields. We also encourage graduate students' participation in the Congress.

Deadline for the submission of a paper and panel proposal: May 15, 2007.

-- Papers for presentation can be written either in English or in Korean. Please indicate whether you wish to participate in an English panel or a Korean Panel.

-- Due for papers is Aug. 1.
Registration fee: US $150
-- US $100 for early registration before May 15;
-- KPSA members exempt.
Accommodation & meals: to be borne by the KPSA (Please see below)
-- The KPSA will guarantee accommodation for those who register before June 15.
-- The KPSA will cover 3 nights (Aug. 22-24) of accommodation and 9 meals (supper on 22nd - lunch on 25th at the designated restaurant).
-- We will try to accommodate late applicants as well, but room assignment is not guaranteed.
-- Participants will be lodged in Sea Cloud Hotel near the Congress site. Newly built and majestically standing on Hawoondae beach, the hotel offers breath-taking ocean view from every room.

SOAS-AKS Postgraduate Korean Language Fellowship

The Centre of Korean Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London, in association with the Academy of Korean Studies, invites applications for a new Korean language fellowship for postgraduates. The fellowship offers six to nine months of intensive Korean language training for holders of a bachelor’s degree wishing to pursue a master’s degree and/or PhD in Korean Studies or another Korea-related subject such as history. All course fees are paid and the hours and start dates of the course can be tailored to accommodate the needs of the successful applicants. Two fellowships are offered. Deadline for applications: April 30, 2007.

Requirements:

- Intermediate level knowledge of Korean is preferred
- Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree and intend to start a master’s degree in Korean Studies or other Korea-related subject shortly after finishing the fellowship
- Preference will be given to candidates who gain admission for an MA or PhD programme at SOAS

- Short statement outlining intentions for future study after completion of the fellowship

Справочник состоит из двух частей: Часть 1. "Рос. центры корееведения"; Часть 2. Биобиблиографический словарь современных рос. корееведов.

Поздравления редколлегии и персонально Т.М.Симбирцевой-Аун. Также радует то, что редколлегия приняла нелегкое, волевое решение выдать по экземпляру каждому, чье имя попало в это издание.

Registration Fee & Financial Support

The registration fee for the congress is 100 USD (30USD for students), payable upon arrival. It will cover conference kit, refreshments, and one copy of congress proceedings. The amount of financial support available for accepted speakers will depend on fund-raising, and successful applicants will be informed about it at later date.

The aim of the program is to deepen world's understanding of Korea by supporting academic activities that will help spread Korean Studies around the world and nurture talented scholars of Korean Studies. Another key purpose The Academy of Korean Studies(AKS) is dedicated to achieve is to enhance the universality and quality of Korean Studies through its support of activities undertaken by overseas researchers of Korean Studies.

I. Programs

1. Visiting Lectureship
The program intends to assist universities in promoting Korean Studies by dispatching appropriate lecturers.

2. Research
The program intends to sponsor projects related to Korean Studies including research papers and books.

3. Academic Forums
The program intends to invigorate academic forums hosted by Korean Studies research organizations.

4. Journal Publications
The program intends to promote publications of Korean Studies papers.

5. Subsidy Publishing
The program intends to assist a researcher's publication on his/her own account related Korean Studies.

6. Encouragement of Research
The program intends to encourage a researcher whose article was published in the journal registered in international official journal.

II. Support Level and Period

1. Support Level
a. Visiting Lectureship
The following support is provided directly to the visiting lecturer. Subsistence allowance(salary), round-trip airfare(economy class) and $100 of monthly expenses for teaching materials

b. Research
Stipends, expenses for books, materials, transportation and others

c. Academic Forums
Honorarium, expenses for travel, accommodations, proceeding publication, conference venue rental fee and others.

d. Journal Publication
Salaries, expenses for editing/screening committee, publication, distribution and others.

e. Subsidy Publishing
Some of the amount paid by a author

f. Encouragement of Research
$3,000 per published article

* Korean Studies Grant is exempted from overhead costs.

2. Support Period
The fund is given for one year basis but mid-long term continuing support for visiting lectureship is available if an applicant institution has a mid-long term plan for promoting Korean Studies and support for visiting professor with improved conditions and convenience.

III. Application Submission and Review

1. Who may submit applications

Full time academic members affiliated in institutions related to Korean Studies outside of Korea.

* The following 2 categories will be considered with different conditions.

a. Subsidy Publishing : Authorswho made a contract with a publisher without any support related publication.
b. Encouragement of Research : Researcher whose article was published in an international journal registered for A&HCI, SSCI or SCI. The journal containing an applied article is required to have been published in 2006.

2. Who may not apply

a. Previous awardees from the Academy of Korean Studies, the Ministry of Education & Human Resources Development(MOE&HRD), and the Korean Research Foundation who failed to submit required reports or were underthe regulation related a low grade are not eligible.
b. Previous awardees who under the regulation related failingto use the grant to implement the project in the approved grant are not eligible.
3. How to submit proposals

a. Proposals should be drawn in AKS's application form and must have all required signatures.
b. All the documents required for application should be written in Korean or English.
4. Required documents

a. Three original applications (AKS's Form) with one CD or disk containing the completed application form.
b. Project Director's certificate of employment
c. Required documents(See Application form)
5. Submission Deadline : March 15, 2007

Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.
6. Notification

Those selected will be notified individually by email in April, 2007. Announcement for visiting lecturers will be made in June, 2007.

Summer Workshop - Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies

The Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies would like to announce the first annual Kyujanggak Korean Studies Summer Workshop taking place from Jun. 25 until Jul. 8, 2007, at Seoul National University. Combining lectures, seminars, hand-on research workshops, cultural performances and field trips, this workshop will serve to teach graduate students and junior scholars in Korean Studies both about current research in the field and also about the wealth of primary source materials related to Korean Studies that are available at Seoul National University and throughout Korea.

The 15th Cultural Program for Foreign Students and Scholars in Korean Studies

The Academy of Korean Studies is pleased to announce its 2007 Cultural Program for Foreigners. As an important part of the mission of AKS is to cultivate scholars and young leaders who can contribute to the development of Korean studies, the Academy has organized this intensive cultural program for those in Korean Studies. The cultural program is composed of various components such as special lectures on Korea, intensive readings and discussions in Korean, field trips, excursions, and traditional cultural activities.

-Program Period-
July 23 - August 17, 2007 (4 weeks)

-Language of the Program-
The entire program will be conducted in Korean. It is crucial that participants have sufficient fluency in Korean to understand undergraduate level lectures and participate in discussions.

-Qualifications and Application Requirements-
1. Undergraduate students of second year or above and/or graduate students in Korean studies

Two notices from the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies

The Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies, a newly restructured institution of Seoul National University, announces its second annual junior post-doctoral level fellowship program for the 2007-2008 academic year. The appointment is for one year, but can be extended for up to two years, upon review. Candidates must have Ph.D. in hand by the time of the appointment and articulate an outstanding research agenda related to the field of Korean Studies. The fellowship will provide a $30,000 stipend, on-campus family housing, round-trip airfare, a $1,500 research fund, and other associated research assistance. Interested fellows may elect to teach one course per academic year, with additional remuneration. The Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies would like to announce the inauguration of their travel grant program. Aimed to promote the advancement of Korean Studies through facilitating the research of the Kyujanggak's unique archive, the grants are open to domestic and foreign professors, lecturers, Ph.D. candidates, and research institute fellows, as well as independent researchers on a case-by-case basis. The grant provides administrative assistance in accessing the archives, as well as 1,000,000W for both foreign and domestic scholars, and up to 1,500,000W for foreign scholars who require a more long-term stay. Upon their acceptance, grantees will be asked to participate fully with the Institute's academic community in their various events, and the results of grantee's work will be encouraged to submit their work for possible publication in the Institute's publications, Hanguk Munhwa and the Seoul Journal of Korean Studies. Текст набирается в программе Microsoft World шрифтом Times New Roman № 12. интервал одинарный, выравнивание текста по ширине страницы. Отступ абзаца - 0,95 см. Параметры страницы (поля) - все по 2 см.
Фамилия автора выравнивается по левому краю, оформляется полужирным шрифтом и курсивом (Times New Roman № 14), инициалы следуют за фамилией. Название статьи набирается полужирным шрифтом, прописными буквами (Times New Roman № 14) и выравнивается по центру страницы.

2007 AKS Fellowship Program for Korean Studies

Очень хорошая и весьма доступная всем программа. Плохо то, что жить и заниматься наукой несколько на отшибе и что нужные книжки, как правило, все на руках. Плюс-минус миллиона в месяц должно хватить на еду и выпивку. Если жутко экономить, можно накупить книжек. Следует только, покупая или принимая в дар очередную книжку, помнить об ограничениях, накладываемых авиакомпаниями на вес багажа (кажется, сейчас на континентальных рейсах всюду стандарт 30 кг).

The AKS fellowship program is designed to provide foreign scholars and doctoral candidates an opportunity to carry out their research (dissertation research) in Korea.

Eligibility
Individuals in the humanities and social sciences who are currently engaged in Korea-related teaching and research activities are eligible to apply for the following fellowship programs (the fellowship is not open to Korean nationals except those with permanent resident status in foreign countries):

1. Senior Research Fellowship: Ph.D. holders at the associate professor level or above at a university or have attained more than 5 year- research experience.
2. Junior Research Fellowship: Ph.D. holders at the assistant professor level or below at a university or have attained less than 5 year- research experience.
3. Pre-doc Fellowship: Doctoral candidates who have completed all academic requirements (i.e., ABD) except their dissertation.
While at the Academy, fellows will be provided the opportunity to give lectures to graduate students and to conduct joint research with faculty members. Applicants are encouraged to submit detailed research plans; particularly, those candidates with research programs that will result in a publication (e.g., a book or dissertation) are preferred.

Grant Period
The period of fellowship may begin any time between January 1 and December 31, 2007 and fellows are eligible for a maximum of one year support after arrival.

Fellowship Grant

(1) Senior Research Fellowship: 1,200,000 won
(2) Junior Research Fellowship: 900,000 won

Selection Procedure and Criteria
All applications are reviewed by a screening committee composed of AKS faculty members. The criteria used in reviewing applications are as follows:
1. Senior or Junior Research Fellowship
(1) The merit of the research plan and the feasibility of carrying out the proposed research at the Academy
(2) Capability to give lectures to the graduate students at the Academy (English preferred)
(3) Possibility of conducting joint research project with AKS faculty members
(4) Capability of translating Korea related book into the foreign languages (English preferred).
2. Pre-doc Fellowship
(1) Excellence and feasibility of research topic
(2) Prospects of the proposed research to the future development of Korean studies
3. Applicant’s educational background, employment history, previous awards record of any fellowship offered by the Academy, the Korean government and other organizations will also be considered.

The Association for Korean Studies in Europe invites you to attend its 23rd Biennale Conference, to be held in France, at Dourdan (50 km south of Paris), 16-20 April 2007. The Conference will be organized in cooperation with the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) Paris, and with the support of the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS). At the same time, the AKSE will commemorate the 30th year of its foundation (1977-2007).

Those who wish to present a paper at the conference should send the title of the proposed paper and a summary of approximately 1000 words (in English, Korean, French or German), plus a bibliography, and state the Subject Area (i.e. Pre-modern History, Modern History, Modern Korean Society, Religions and Philosophy, Linguistics, Anthropology and Folklore, Literature, and Arts and Archaeology).

Registration & Financial Support

The registration fee for the congress is 30 USD, payable upon arrival. It will cover congress kit, refreshments, and one copy of congress proceedings. Accepted speakers will be provided free meals and accommodations during the congress period as well as partial compensation for travel expenses. National treasure of Korea to go home

A set of voluminous documents that constitutes one of only four known definitive records of the era of Korean kings--and which vanished when Japan controlled the Korean Peninsula--will be returned to its rightful owner, the University of Tokyo announced Wednesday.

Koreans say "The Annals of the Choson Dynasty" were stolen during Japan's 1910-45 colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula.

The set of handwritten books is registered as a national treasure in South Korea. The volumes ended up at the university's library.

Cultural properties experts and politicians in South Korea had long demanded the volumes be returned.

The university said it would return the records to Seoul National University with the proviso that they are used to promote scholarly exchange between the two institutions.

Spanning the period from 1392-1863, when the Choson Dynasty held sway, the volumes are regarded as an official history of the reigns of 25 kings.

Several copies of the annals were made and stored at Buddhist temples around Korea to ensure the records would survive.

The volumes that came into the possession of the University of Tokyo are known as the Odaesan in reference to the mountain retreat where they were stored.

Two of the other annals are in South Korea. The final one is in North Korea.

The Odaesan set kept in Japan contains 47 volumes, whereas a complete history is made up of close to 2,000 volumes.

According to university officials, the Odaesan set was brought to Japan by the Oriental scholar Kurakichi Shiratori.

An entry in a scholarly journal of the time indicates it was included in the university collection from 1912.

However, many volumes in the annals were destroyed by fire during the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. Only 74 volumes that had been taken out of the library survived.

Of that number, 27 volumes were moved to Keijo Imperial University, in what is now Seoul, in 1932 when it was still under Japanese control.

In addition to being registered as a national treasure in South Korea, the annals were also included in UNESCO's Memory of the World Register in 1997.

ICKS 2nd International Forum on Korean Studies

ICKS 2nd International Forum on Korean Studies, July 6-7, 2006 Korea University “Situating Korean Studies in a Global and multi-Disciplinary Context”

The first International Forum on Korean Studies held in 2005 under the title of Current Trends and Future Objectives of Korean Studies attracted many Korean/Asian Studies center directors and eminent scholars from around the world. The forum was successful in detailing the current status of Korean Studies and provided a venue where the directors and scholars were able to analyze these situations (information on past forums can be found at http://icks.korea.ac.kr/conf/index.htm).

As a next step in promoting the dialogue amongst the colleagues of Korean Studies, ICKS wants to hold the 2nd International Forum on Korean Studies under the theme of how to expand the area and the field of Korean Studies. It will be held at Korea University on July 6-7, 2006 and the title of the forum is Situating Korean Studies in a Global and multi-Disciplinary Context. It is hoped that this forum will provide a clearer picture of the boundaries of Korean Studies geographical, social, political and academic boundaries-and ways to expand these boundaries.

The forum will be divided into two sections: the general discussion will be composed of panelist presenting their views on the theme of the forum, and moderated individual sessions will have presentations and discussions on specific fields of Korean Studies in relation to the theme of the forum. This will provide both a broad and detailed picture of the theme and will stimulate many more scholars to participate in the forum.

The conference will be attended by Yoon-Dae Euh (President, Korea University), In-Hyuk Kwon (President, Korea Foundation), and Sang-Man Huh (President, Korea Research Foundation). Each of the dignitaries will give a congratulatory address to commemorate and to start the ICKS 2nd International Forum on Korean Studies.

It will then be followed by a keynote speech which will be given by Dwight Perkins (Harvard University) on “Trends and Prospects of Research on Korea Relative to that on China and Japan.” And then a panel composed of scholars from various regions of the world will discuss the theme of the conference, Situating Korean Studies in a Global and multi-Disciplinary Context. The panel will include David McCann (Harvard University), Gi-Wook Shin (Stanford University), Ah Jeong Suh (Korea Foundation), Ken Wells (Australian National University), Jianyi Piao (Chinese Academy of Sciences), Ivan Bondarenko (National Taras Shevchenko University).

There will be six individual sessions: Yoshitaka Mori (Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music) will explore the rise of “Korean wave”, the massive interest in Korean pop culture especially in Asia, in his paper, “The Winter Sonata Phenomenon and Cultural Practices of the Fans in Japan.” John Ohnesorge (University of Wisconsin) will compare the political processes of Korea and the United States in “Impeachments Compared: Presidents Roh and Clinton in Law and Politics.”

The second day of conference will begin with a special session celebrating the 60th anniversary of Korea University’s College of Liberal Arts which will feature Naoki Sakai (Cornell University) presenting a paper on “National and Transnational Identity and Culture in East Asian and Korean Studies.” In session 4, Robert Neville will give a paper on “Local Cultures in a Global Society.” Naoyuki Umemori (Waseda University) will speak on “Korean Politics and Police Reform in the Early 20th Century” and Kyeong-Hee Choi (University of Chicago) will give a presentation titled “The Challenge of Modern Korean Literature: Between the Colonial and the ‘Post Colonial’.”

Kyujanggak Fellowship Announcement

The Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies, a newly restructured institution of Seoul National University, created through the consolidation of the Kyujanggak Archives into the Institute of Korean Studies, announces a new research fellowship program starting in August 2007. However, candidates with exceptional qualifications may apply for immediate consideration, with the fellowship term beginning in September, 2006. The appointment is for one year but can be extended, upon review, up to two years. The candidates should have a Ph.D. by the time of the appointment, and demonstrate an outstanding research agenda related to the field of Korean Studies. The fellowship will provide a $ 30,000 stipend (or up to $ 40,000 for those with institutional affiliation), round-trip airfare, a $ 1,500 research fund, research assistance, and help in finding housing. Interested fellows may elect to teach one course per academic year, with additional remuneration.

The “Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies” is a newly restructured institution of Seoul National University. Created through the consolidation of the Kyujanggak Archives into the Institute of Korean Studies, the Institute sets out with the purpose of establishing the University’s position as a global leader in Korean Studies through the promotion of research and education.

The Institute seeks contributions to the Seoul Journal of Korean Studies (SJKS) for its next issue, to be published in December 2006. The SJKS has been published once a year since its inception in 1988. With a new board of editors and editorial advisors we anticipate increasing the frequency of publication to twice a year. Article submissions are welcomed from a variety of academic disciplines, so long as they fit within the customary framework of “Korean Studies.” Articles that pursue both theoretical and conceptual investigations together with a rigorous empirical assessment are especially encouraged. Interested contributors should submit their abstracts by June 1, 2006, and the final papers by August 21. Articles may also be accepted for later publication, possibly in June 2007.

All articles will be printed in English. If the contribution is in another language, the original and an English translation are requested. It is the policy of SJKS to consider only articles that are not simultaneously being considered for publication elsewhere. Manuscripts submitted to SJKS are anonymously reviewed by two or more referees. The editor will return any manuscripts that do not meet submission requirements. A (U.S.) $500 honorarium will be paid for all accepted articles. Guidelines for submission

SJKS is a refereed journal and authors are advised to supply their names only on the cover page. Articles may be submitted with photos or illustrations, but these should be clearly identified with captions and photo credits and ready for direct reproduction. The length of the papers can vary; however they should not exceed 10,000 words. All references must be cited in full, using a standard academic style (Chicago or MLA). Papers should be written in English with Asian citations in transliteration or Asian scripts. Use American spellings rather than British spellings (thus, “labor” rather than “labour”) but do not change the spellings of words in quotations.

New Korean Studies Program

Akita International University has initiated a new undergraduate program in Korean Studies. Dr. C. Kenneth Quinones, Ph.D. Harvard University and a retired U.S. Foreign Service officer, assumed his new position as professor of Korean Studies on April 10, 2006. He will teach three courses during the current academic year: History of Modern Korea, Contemporary Society of North and South Korea, and Topics in East Asian Relations.
Akita International University is a relatively new, but already highly rated academic institution. All classes are taught in English and all students are required to study abroad for one year prior to graduation. The university has exchange programs with more than 25 institutions around the world.
Akita International University is rated the third most difficult university to gain admission to in Japan after the universities of Tokyo and Kyoto. It is located in Akita, a one hour flight north of Tokyo.
